Multi Media: Leather, Acrylic Paint, Cotton Balls, Elmer's Glue, Watercolor, +.
9 x 12 x 2 in,
Fall 2024
For this project, we were told to make an artist book. For my artist book, I took inspiration from Robert Wun's collection about the 4 characteristics of the human body: Flesh, Blood, Bone, and Soul.
For the flesh portion, I used an SFX makeup technique to create a skin like texture using cotton balls and Elmer's Glue, then painted it and glued it to a piece of leather. The Blood portion was made by pouring clear glue dyed red onto a piece of plastic, heated and agitated with a hair dryer. The bone portion was created by carving the shape out of cardboard, leaving behind the corrugated parts of the cardboard to create depth. The Soul portion was created using color and pose to emphasize emotion. I painted the figures in watercolor, gave the paper a tea stain, and burned the edges for an aged look. The technique used to bind the book is similar to the Coptic stitch.
